30 years of dead Elvis

The 30th anniversary of the death of Elvis is coming up on August 16th. It’s a pretty big deal and they’ll be doing all sorts of crazy stuff in Memphis, Tennessee. I’m an Elvis fan but not a real big one. I just basically like the theory that he faked his death and is still out there some place. That concept was covered nicely in the film Bubba Ho-Tep played by the always amaziningly funny (pre Burn Notice) Bruce Campbell.

Bubba Ho-Tep

So anyway, I really didn’t know about the 30th anniversary until I heard about it from Chris Staros. Who is a gigantic Elvis fan, probably the biggest that you’d run across at any comic book convention. He said he liked the Buba Ho-Tep movie and when I ran across this action figure (Wizard World is covered with toy booths) from NECA I had to buy it for him. It’ll probably end up in a box in the Top Shelf warehouse but it’s the thought that counts. It’s actually a pretty neat sculpt.

Dead Elvis

Being a semi-Elvis fan I’m glad I was able to draw my version of dead Elvis for the Recalcitrant Jones and the Deadbeats comic in Students of the Unusual. I actually dressed up as dead Elvis for Halloween about 10 years ago. No I will not post a picture of it.

Wizard World Day 1

It’s a tight squeeze, but I’ve really got about twice the space I was expecting to have at the Top Shelf booth. Today was a really great day for me for a mainstream show and the crowd wasn’t really that big. The majority of the sales are totally because I’m at the Top Shelf booth, which I’m greatly appreciative of. The new improved Fat Packs have sold really well. I also noticed that the Wide Awake horror anthology has actually pulled over some “Zombie” type fans that I’m sure wouldn’t have stopped at the booth. Not that they’ve bought anything else.

There are a lot of costumed people walking around and the best of which is absolutely the old man as Obi Wan. I didn’t take a picture of him, but he was really great. Maybe I’ll snap a shot tomorrow.
