Some Secrets for a Super Summer!

Here are a few Secrets for a Super Summer with me, J Chris Campbell!

Go Kick The Leg! It’s a graphic novel my buddy Van Jensen has put together about the disembodied, sentient leg of Santa Anna as it ventures on a quest to save Mexico. The book has been funded but we still need help making a Spanish version happen. Just a few hours left to jump in and be a part of something unique and fun! Click!

Learn about comics! I’m teaching a Cartoon & Comic Crash Course at the Fine Arts Center July 14th-18th. I’m super proud to have the opportunity and very excited to teach in such an amazing facility! So if your young’n is a 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th grader then hurry while there is still room to sign them up!

The Bat Cast

Listen to me talk about Batman with my friends Dean Trippe and Jason Horn on their new podcast call The Bat Cast. We talked about the recent Batman costume, the new Gotham TV Show and my favorite Batman show. There are a couple of curse words and naughty things so please listen with your sailor ears.

Heroes Convention

Go to Heroes Convention! I love this show so much! I’ve been going every year for a very long time and it is a huge part of me. I look forward to it every year. This year is going to be Interstellar Fun with tons of stuff going on all over. Including getting to hang with my pal Brad McGinty who hasn’t been around in forever! I’ll be talking about all my other super friends and a lot more very soon. Until then you can read the top 8 reason’s to go that I put together a few years ago.

See me at Monstercon again this year. I had a great time last year and I look forward to seeing you all again on July 18-20 in Greenville, SC at Timmons Arena! Maybe I’ll throw a cookout since it’s basically in my backyard.

Sport a new T-shirt or adorn your garb with buttons. There is a ton of new stuff in my shop if you haven’t dropped by in a while. Make sure to pick up the new Cylinder Oil shirt before they are no longer available.

You are really great

Wow, that is a lot of stuff! You are number one for reading it all! Sure you’ll have a great summer without doing any of this stuff. But I’d have a better summer if you were a part of it. I appreciate your support and friendship! Now go enjoy your summer!

Amazing Spider-Man 2 is very long

Amazing Spider-Man 2 came out today. I saw it yesterday, but not at the midnight showing. We got to see it at 7 pm. I’m not sure when they stopped the midnight showing debut for movies but it sure does make for a soft opening. There were 10 people in the theatre with us. It seems that since they’ve taken away the midnight showing it breaks up the crowd and makes it less of an event. Apparently the 9 pm showing was when the action happened. I didn’t see the size of that crowd because the movie was 2 hours and 22 minutes long. And it really does feel like it is that long.

I was excited to see the return of the classic costume in action. The animators really did a great job of making it look more realistic. With wrinkles and fabric flapping in the wind while he swings thru the city. There were some really fun “go pro”views of him shooting webs and zooming past buildings. I’m a long time Spider-man fan so that stuff was pretty fantastic to see.

In the first movie Andrew Garfield really annoyed me. He played Spidey a lot more cocky than I think he should be. I like my Parker humble and my Spidey a little cocky with some quippy mixed in. In this movie, He felt a lot more even and I think he does a pretty good job at being Spider-Man. Especially in this movie’s first scene with Spider-man trying to stop a heist. It’s full of great humor and neat stunts, even if they are cg.

Making fun of bad guys

Humor is another reason I loved the comics growing up. But it was always balanced with terrible things that Spider-man had to endure. Especially the many deaths he could have stopped from happening. AS1 and AS2 both have pretty major death scenes that are also a part of Spider-man loir. It’s hard to sit thru with a younger kid, especially the one that happens in this movie. It’s pretty heavy stuff.

The chemistry of Andrew and Emma in these movies is pretty undeniable. So it’s no surprise that they are a couple in real life. Every scene they are in together feels right and Emma Stone does a great job at creating a Gwen Stacy for today’s girls. She’s smarter than Peter and is strong willed with her own agendas and things to add to the story. She is a pretty crucial part to both the movies. Unlike Peter’s parents who they keep putting emphasis on.

I’m not sure where they’re getting this stuff about them being super genius millionaire scientist. But it really bothers me. One of the appealing things about Spidey is that anyone could have been him. You could be Spider-Man kid! It was an accident and had you been there instead of Peter, you’d be swinging around New York with your costume flapping in the wind. But no, everything has to be connected and nothing is by chance. The “magic” is lost and everything happens for a reason.

Not bad for someone with the power of a spider

I really did enjoy the movie. Sure there were some parts that were a little strange, like the german scientist torturing electro. Or the horrible CGI that showed Paul Giamatti in the Rhino suit and the music playing electric tower things. But it’s a movie based on a comic book character! So I wasn’t surprised.

I was surprised at how little there was of Spider-man in action. Or rather how little it felt like there was. It was a little painful waiting thru all the story just to see Spidey in action again. I can’t imagine what it would be like to see this as a kid. It’s full of lots of stories and lots of talking and after a while you do start to look at your watch and say “How long is this movie?”

The internet will find a way to edit it down I’m sure. They’ll be several versions like the all action AS2 or the Electro Story.I’m looking forward to the Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy scenes edited to create a romantic comedy. There’s something for everyone in this movie and I guess that’s why it had to be so long. I’m just glad it wasn’t a midnight showing.

Free Comics for Boys, Girls, Men & Women!

what is free comic book day?

FCBD is a whole mess of fun. I’ve made appearances manymanymany times and have enjoyed them all. But I understand not everyone is familiar with the event, so I’ve put together a little helpful guide to FCBD.
what?

What is FCBD and why should I even care?

Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) is when participating comic book shops, around the world, give away select comic books for FREE! A lot of shops have all sorts of stuff going on like huge sales, costume contest, prizes, local charities, special giveaways and costumed guests. One thing I love about FCBD is seeing all the comic book creators who come out to support the shops. They sign books and sketch for everyone who stops by and they usually do it for free. They often bring exclusive items for purchase or for free. Things you’d have to go to a comic convention to find.

Each shop is a little different in how they participate, but regardless what’s going on, Free Comic Book Day really is a fantastic way to celebrate comics and get new readers into comic shops. So mark your digital calendars for a repeating event because it is always observed on the first Saturday in May each year.

Where the heck am I suppose to go?

I’ll be enjoying Free Comic Book Day again this year at Richard’s Comics & Collectables right down the street from Greenville’s other comic shop Borderlands. But if you don’t have the pleasure of living in beautiful Upstate of South Carolina then you need to use the handy-dandy FCBD Comic Shop Locator. Why not make a day of it and visit all the shops in your area. Every shop is individually distinctive and may even have different free comics available.

What in the world should I expect?where?

Free Comics of course! But not every comic book in the shop is free. Retailers purchase special books that are offered by various publishers just for the day. Most shops have them obviously set apart from the regular comics and may have a limit to how many you can get. It’s a great time to pick up something different or get something new from an old favorite. Not all of them are kid friendly but good shops make sure you know what you’re getting into. Here is a listing of all the comics available but remember not every store has them all.

If you get there early then prepare to stand in line for a little bit. Going later in the day does cut down on line standing but it also limits your choices because some of the more obscure titles get wiped out early. I’d suggest not getting any Marvel or DC books at the first stop if you’re going to multiple places. Shops know those titles are popular so they order plenty of those books and always have them on hand by the end of the day.

Also expect lots of smiling faces and friendly people. FCBD is like Christmas and a birthday party all rolled into one. Some shops take advantage of the day and treat it like a tiny convention with tons of things going on. Others just have the comics set out with no fanfare at all. Again, each shop is different so your experience at each will vary. It’s a great excuse to try all the ones in your area. but!

But I live in the black mining hills of Dakota and there isn’t a comic shop around. What ever shall I do with myself on Free Comic Book Day?

I understand that some folks just aren’t lucky enough to have a comic shop in town. It’s ok, I feel your pain. Fear not! There are plenty of digital comics available online for FREE. I even helped produce 4 anthologies that you can go check out right now. They’re available from Wide Awake Press: Eats, Piltdown, The Ancient Age and Off The Wall

Do you really expect me to read all this nonsense? Don’t you know I’m a busy person?

I totally understand. Click play on the video below for your information. I didn’t create the video, and I cover some things not mentioned here. But it’ll do for getting you up to speed and hopefully convincing you to come celebrate Free Comic Book Day!

If you’ve never been, then you should come out and see what’s going on.

Saturday May 3rd from 11am until 7pm!!
