Posted by J Chris in Comics

If all goes as planned I will be selling comics at the 2007 Dragon-Con at Top Shelf Comic’s table. It’s Aug 31 - September 3 in Atlanta GA. Even though it’s right down the road from me I’ve never been. So I’m really looking forward to the craziness. See you there!

Hulk Smash

Posted by J Chris in Comics, JCC

Go check out the Dollar Bin’s newest podcast about the Hulk. You’ll get to hear me sound like a true mumbling moron as I try to drop my Hulk knowledge. It’s a really fun podcast regardless how stupid I think I sound. At the end of the show you can hear John sing a part of his song that will be featured on the Students of the Unusual rock cd.

Hulk am dead sexy
While we’re talking Hulk here is a sketch card I did a while back. Go to the link and check out Rob Ullman’s and Duane Ballenger’s.

Eleven Years & Stardust

Posted by J Chris in Comics, JCC

Today my wife and I celebrated 11 years of Marriage. We went out to eat at our favorite date eating joint, Portofino’s. It’s not really all that swanky, but it’s swanky enough. If you go order the Pollo Draconcello and scarf down a belly full of their fresh made rolls soaked in garlic butter. So gooooooooooddddd.

Portofino’s

So after that we went to the movies. Which have increased to 9 bucks! That’s freaking crazy for little Greenville, 9 dollars? Anyway, we saw Stardust which is a movie that’s been off my radar even though it’s based on a comic book by Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess. What’s even more crazy is I bought my wife the novel for Christmas which she hasn’t read yet and totally forgot about until I just remembered doing this post. So double shame on us, but double good for the movie because we had zero hopes going in and so we were totally entertained. It was a really fun movie especially for 2 young kids like us to see on our anniversary. Go see it with your lovey goggles on.

Wizard World Day 2

Posted by J Chris in Art, Comics, Events, Robots

Today was a pretty good day. A little bit better than yesterday but not by much. I’ve been hand drawing robots and from the looks of it I’ll be bringing them home with me. So let me know if you’d like to have one.

30 years of dead Elvis

Posted by J Chris in Comics, Events, Toys

The 30th anniversary of the death of Elvis is coming up on August 16th. It’s a pretty big deal and they’ll be doing all sorts of crazy stuff in Memphis, Tennessee. I’m an Elvis fan but not a real big one. I just basically like the theory that he faked his death and is still out there some place. That concept was covered nicely in the film Bubba Ho-Tep played by the always amaziningly funny (pre Burn Notice) Bruce Campbell.

Bubba Ho-Tep

So anyway, I really didn’t know about the 30th anniversary until I heard about it from Chris Staros. Who is a gigantic Elvis fan, probably the biggest that you’d run across at any comic book convention. He said he liked the Buba Ho-Tep movie and when I ran across this action figure (Wizard World is covered with toy booths) from NECA I had to buy it for him. It’ll probably end up in a box in the Top Shelf warehouse but it’s the thought that counts. It’s actually a pretty neat sculpt.

Dead Elvis

Being a semi-Elvis fan I’m glad I was able to draw my version of dead Elvis for the Recalcitrant Jones and the Deadbeats comic in Students of the Unusual. I actually dressed up as dead Elvis for Halloween about 10 years ago. No I will not post a picture of it.

Wizard World Day 1

It’s a tight squeeze, but I’ve really got about twice the space I was expecting to have at the Top Shelf booth. Today was a really great day for me for a mainstream show and the crowd wasn’t really that big. The majority of the sales are totally because I’m at the Top Shelf booth, which I’m greatly appreciative of. The new improved Fat Packs have sold really well. I also noticed that the Wide Awake horror anthology has actually pulled over some “Zombie” type fans that I’m sure wouldn’t have stopped at the booth. Not that they’ve bought anything else.

There are a lot of costumed people walking around and the best of which is absolutely the old man as Obi Wan. I didn’t take a picture of him, but he was really great. Maybe I’ll snap a shot tomorrow.

I was really happy to snag a copy of Jay StephensHeroes!: Draw Your Own Superheroes, Gadget Geeks & Other Do-GoodersBlue Line Art had it for 6 bucks!!

Wizard World Preview Night

Posted by J Chris in Comics, Events

I don’t know why they have a 3 hour preview night. Other than it allowed everyone there to walk around and complain that they don’t know why there is a 3 hour preview night.

I was able to grab the exclusive JLU 3 pack for my buddy Rob Ullman. I kind of wanted one for me, but then I decided against it. But I will be keeping the poster with all the current figures listed on it. It’s easier to store.

Wizard World Chicago 2007

I’ve put together a new “Fat Pack” that you can put on your bookshelf. 12 comics, a button and a brand new “It’s the Attic Bugs” sticker all in a nice little plastic pack.

So we’re here in Chicago in the very nice Hyatt. They’ve done a lot of revamping of the hotel and apparently they removed the crazy wires hanging from the ceiling in between the walkways inside the Hyatt.

Thanks to the great folks over at Top Shelf Productions I will be attending Wizard World Chicago. So if you’re looking for me during the 9th-12th I’ll be at booth 542. I plan on having a special little thing to add to the new and improved Fat Pack. But that’s about it on the new front.

Power up your snail mail

Posted by J Chris in Comics, Plugs

Starting thursday you can add a little POW to your mail with Marvel postage stamps! Each 41-cent iconic square is ready to peal and stick and really snazes up that letter to the electric company.

Thing Stamp

Here is what the United States Postal Service has to say about it.

Marvel Super Heroes
With these 20 colorful stamps, the U.S. Postal Service salutes stars from the world of Marvel Comics. For decades, Super Heroes have been synonymous with the comic book medium. Their adventures have provided an escape from every day life and demonstrate that individuals can make a difference. Comic books aren’t simply “kid stuff” — adults have always been among their readers, and the form has attracted its share of serious artists and writers. And Super Heroes have responded to social and political issues from their beginnings.
Marvel Postage Stamps
Ten stamps on the pane of 20 are portraits of individual Marvel characters: Captain America, Elektra, Iron Man, Silver Surfer, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Sub-Mariner, The Incredible Hulk, The Thing and Wolverine.

The other 10 stamps depict individual Marvel Comic book covers. Information about the artwork shown on each stamp appears on the back on the stamp pane.
