Hellboy

Posted by J Chris in 01-Illustration, Monsters

Man this summer has put a serious dent on my children’s college fund with all the movies I’ve been going to see. But I think for my entertainment dollar movies are still cheaper per hour than comic books. A comic is 3 bucks (secret invasion is 4) and you can read them in like 10 minutes. So that’s about 36 dollars for 2 hours of entertainment.

Hellboy versus the ghost
Hellboy is next up on your movie-geek-reference-card. It’s out of place in the line-up for some reason. How is your score so far? I’ll soon be 8 for 13.

The Incredible Hulk

Posted by J Chris in Comics, Monsters

The big green guy is out this weekend. Don’t let the commercial fool you, Tony Stark is only in the movie for about as long as he is in the ad.

For some real Iron Man and Hulk action catch this killer Marvel produced animation.

Dungeons and Dragons

Posted by J Chris in Monsters

Gary Gygax died last week. I was a little under the weather and didn’t post about it. I started to write a really nice entry and it morphed into a story. So I think I’ll keep working on it as a little remembrance in comic form perhaps.

Until then all you need to know is I’ve played a lot of D&D in my life. A ton of it actually. I’ve got a shelf dedicated to it, not a room thankfully (that’s full of toys). A few months back I was thinking about it and did some doodles in my sketch book.

Dungeons and dragons

I really appreciate the time I’ve spent with friends around a table piled with books, dice, maps, manuals and food. I’d like to thank Mr. Gygax and everyone else with whom I shared those times. Moander the shambling mound shall take us all one day.

Lizard Man of SC

Posted by J Chris in Monsters

My wife ran across this video news report: Lizard Man chewed up my van

I couldn’t believe I had never heard of the Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swap. After doing a tiny bit of research I noticed that our Lizard Man needed a name. Native American tribes of Carolinas talked about local living lizard or fish men called the Inzignanin. That’s way long and hard to remember. So I shortened it to Inzig maybe, I should have called him Nanin.

What do you call your local lizard man?

Randolf the tree monster - J Chris Campbell

Randolph the tree monster was not fond of the holiday season.
This was compounded further by his unfortunate physical appearance and poor fashion sense.

Carve it up

Posted by J Chris in Monsters

Go carve you up a pumpkin while the boss is outside on smoke break. I’m sure there are tons of these sites out there. This one just got sent to me today so we’ll just use it.

digital pumpkin 2

This is basically the same design I used to loose this years annual Green Villain pumpkin carving contest. My buddy Jamie Ouzts won it for the second year in a row. That’s the first time that has happened in 10 years. He’s a pretty spokey guy.

The story of the Mountain King

Posted by J Chris in Comics, Monsters

The Mountain King

I was going to do a story with the Mountain King for the horror anthology Wide Awake 666. It was actually a fable about a mountain goat and it was going to be done in a paper cut out style. Instead I decided to remove Uncle Jabby from the upcoming Zig Zag 2 comic.

Uncle Jabby

I’m glad I did and I think he works well in the anthology with all the full colorness. Hopefully one day I’ll get around to doing the story of the Mountain King. Until then you’ll just have to enjoy this version of him.

While your there why not pick up a few of Brian Froud’s Goblins. I still wish I had a copy of his The World of the Dark Crystal book.

Brian Froud’s Goblins!

While we’re talking about Mr. Froud and the Dark Crystal, did you know they are making a sequal? The Power of the Dark Crystal! I know!! And Mr. Froud is all over it along with Genndy Tartakovsky!

Power of the Dark Crystal

Edit: Like a big dum dum I forgot to mention the new Dark Crystal graphic novel series by Tokyopop. It’s Legend’s of The Dark Crystal and it’s a prequel to the original Dark Crystal movie.

If you’re digging the monsters, check out IndiePulp.com they are posting them fresh daily. While you’re there why not read some of the excellent reviews they have lying around.

Now on with the show!!

It wasn’t until he was halfway down the street I realized he wasn’t coming back. That day I learned one of life’s lessons… never let a Lion Mane Gremlin ride your skateboard.
